The question comes up in nearly every wedge session, usually phrased as "how do I know when they are done?" The honest answer is that they were never binary, and by the time a wedge looks worn to the naked eye it has already been under-performing for a long while.
The Edge Goes Before the Depth Does
People inspect grooves by looking at how deep they appear. That is the wrong feature. What actually generates friction on a partial or a rough-lie shot is the sharpness of the groove edge — the corner where the flat face meets the groove wall.
A new wedge has an edge with a very small radius. Sand, dirt and repeated contact round that corner off progressively. The groove is still there, still measurably deep, and it has lost a large share of what it was doing. This is why a wedge can look fine and behave badly, and it is the single most common surprise in a groove assessment.
A Rough Timeline
Numbers here assume a golfer playing regularly in Florida, which is a harsher environment than most because the season never really stops and the sand is abrasive. Somebody playing thirty rounds a year in a cold climate can roughly double all of it.
- Rounds 1 to 25. Edges are sharp, performance is at its peak. You will not detect any change at all in this window, and neither will we without measuring.
- Rounds 25 to 60. Edge radius begins to round in the impact zone, typically one groove above and two below centre. Full shots are unaffected. Partial shots from anything less than a perfect lie start losing a little bite, and you will attribute it to your technique.
- Rounds 60 to 100. The rounding is now measurable and the wear pattern is visible under angled light as a dulled band across the middle of the face. Wet-condition performance degrades noticeably here first, because moisture is exactly what grooves exist to deal with.
- Rounds 100 to 150. Meaningful loss on partial shots in most conditions. Players usually notice at this stage, and typically blame the ball or their contact.
- Beyond 150. The face is doing considerably less than it was designed to. A replacement is genuinely worth the money at this point rather than a marginal upgrade.
The wedge you use least is often the one that is most worn, because it is also the one you clean least. Frequency of use and frequency of cleaning are not the same variable.
What Wears Fastest, and Where
Wear is not distributed evenly across the face. Three factors dominate:
Sand exposure. Bunker shots are abrasive in a way turf shots are not, and coarse shell-heavy sand of the kind found on the older courses around here is considerably harder on a face than soft silica. A player who practises bunker shots seriously will wear a sand wedge two or three times faster than a player who avoids them.
Strike concentration. A consistent ball striker concentrates all the wear in a small band, so that band degrades fast while the rest of the face stays new. A more scattered striker spreads the wear and the club lasts longer overall — one of the few advantages of inconsistency.
Finish type. Raw and unplated finishes are not softer in themselves, but the surface treatment between the grooves can wear differently from a chrome plate. Neither is categorically better; they simply age differently and should be judged differently.
How We Assess It
In a session we look at edge radius under magnification, compare it against a reference face, and map where on the face the wear sits relative to where you actually strike the ball. That last part matters: heavy wear in a band you never use tells us nothing.
It is common for the assessment to disagree with the golfer's assumption. The wedge that looks grubbiest is frequently the one still doing its job, while the tidy-looking gap wedge that has taken four hundred practice bunker shots is finished.
What You Can Do Meanwhile
Nothing recovers a rounded edge — that material is gone. But a great deal of what golfers diagnose as wear is actually contamination, and that is entirely reversible. A groove packed with dried turf and sand performs like a worn one and cleans out in seconds. If your wedges are in the middle of the timeline above, cleaning discipline will buy back more performance than anything else available to you.
Sharpening tools are a different matter, and worth being blunt about: running a groove sharpener down a face removes material unevenly, usually leaves the groove out of conforming tolerance, and produces an edge that wears back off within a handful of rounds. We do not do it and we would advise against paying anyone else to.
